traditional Greek salad recipe

Traditional Greek salad recipe with cheese and cucumber

Today's recipe is a refreshing salad of Greek origin perfect for the hot summer.

I had the opportunity to try it 3 years ago during a trip to the Greek islands. I was on a beach on the island of Mykonos and we decided to eat something at a beach bar. That was where I ordered the horiatiki salata or better known in Spain as Greek salad.

It's a very simple dish, but at the same time nutritious and refreshing , designed to relieve the heat. For this reason, it is one of the salads that I like to prepare during the hottest months of the year along with cold soups like Andalusian gazpacho or the Cantaloupe Gazpacho .

To prepare it alone we need vegetables that we all have at home such as pepper, cucumber or tomato as well as a little feta cheese typical of the Greek country. Black olives are also important. If possible, they should be Kalamata type olives, which are the ones included in the original recipe from the region.

As a dressing we recommend using oil and salt. Optionally we can use a little Modena vinegar or lemon juice.

How to make a Greek-style salad

  1. The first step is to wash and cut all the vegetables. Peel the onion and cut it into julienne strips. If we want to reduce its flavor a bit, we can leave it in cold water for half an hour with a tablespoon of vinegar.
  2. We wash the cherry tomatoes and cut them in half. If you prefer to use regular tomatoes, cut them into quarters. We reserve in a salad bowl.
  3. Open the pepper, remove the seeds and pour plenty of water. We cut into slices and reserve with the tomato.
  4. Once we have reduced the flavor of the onion, add it to the salad bowl with the rest of the ingredients.
  5. Cut the ends of the cucumber, peel it and cut it into slices. Reserve with the other vegetables.
  6. Cut the feta cheese and add it together with the black olives to the bowl or salad bowl where we have stored the rest of the vegetables. We mix all the ingredients.
  7. Add a drizzle of olive oil and a pinch of salt. Optionally, it can be accompanied by a splash of lemon juice to give the Greek salad an acidic touch. We can also add a little oregano.
  8. Now we only have to serve our diners on plates and enjoy a fresh summer salad typical of Greece.
