Homemade Catalan broad beans recipe
The drowned beans, shaken beans or Catalan beans is a traditional recipe of Catalonia prepared with broad beans, black sausages, chives, garlic and aromatic leaves such as rosemary, bay leaf or thyme.
My grandmother, like many other dishes, already cooked them for me since I was little. She loves to prepare traditional dishes from the country (as I have mentioned in other recipes on the cosmorecetas blog).
It is a very easy recipe to prepare. You can use all types of sausage varieties and add the aromatic leaves that you like the most. As I always say, this is just the base recipe. From here you must let your imagination fly and find your own recipe for drowned beans.
The only advice I will give you is that use fresh beans instead of frozen. Although it may not seem like it, there is a big difference. The taste will not be the same. Therefore, if you want to achieve good results in the kitchen then you should cook the recipe with fresh beans.
Before leaving you with the broad bean recipe I want to give you some recommendations. If you like cooking you can't miss our plate of meatballs with cuttlefish , our Chickpeas with cod either Shakshuka recipe .

How to make Catalan-style broad beans
- The first step is to peel the pods and remove all the beans. We wash them and reserve. If you already have them peeled you can skip this step.
- Chop the chives into small pieces. We repeat the same step with the tender garlic.
- We cut the bacon into pieces. Cut the black sausage and chorizo into medium-thick slices. Thickness is optional. If you like large pieces of sausage and chorizo you can opt for a thicker thickness.
- In a saucepan we add olive oil and let it heat up. Once it is hot, we add the bacon pieces along with the young garlic that we have previously cut.
- At this point we can optionally add a ham bone. We also put the onion. The bone will give a more powerful flavor to the dish of Catalan broad beans with sausage and chorizo.
- Let's stir for about 3 minutes. Next we add the bay leaves and rosemary sprigs. We continue stirring over medium heat for 3 more minutes.
- The next step is to add the pieces of chorizo and black sausage that we have previously cut together with the 500 grams of peeled broad beans. Remove and leave 2 minutes.
- Add a glass of vegetable broth or water. Cover and let the liquid reduce over medium heat. We add a little salt and pepper, cover and wait about 30 minutes.
- The 30 minutes is an approximate time. I recommend checking the condition of the beans until they are soft and wrinkled. This is the exact point where we can put out the fire.
- Now all we have to do is serve and enjoy a good meal in company.
