Apple Crumble Pie Recipe
Apple crumble is a traditional english dessert . The basic ingredients of the recipe are seasonal fruit, sugar, flour and butter.
An advantage of this candy is that it is very versatile. Can use all types of fruit for the filling and also all kinds of nuts, oats and muesli to prepare the crunchy cake topping.
I remember trying this dessert for the first time in 2014, when I went on a trip to England to visit a friend who was studying at the University of London.
It was winter and it was cold. One day eating in a restaurant I decided to order it for dessert and I had it with a delicious hot custard .
A few months ago, remembering that trip, that delicious typical dessert came to mind. I couldn't wait. That same weekend I prepared the Apple Crumble .
Winter is coming. For this reason I have decided to bring this recipe to the cosmorecetas blog so you can prepare it and warm up during family Christmas meals.

How to make a delicious apple crumble
We have divided the preparation into three steps: the preparation of the filling, the outer layer and the final preparation and presentation:
Preparation of the apple filling
- The first step is to clean and cut the apples into small dice-shaped pieces. It is not necessary to remove the skin. We have prepared the recipe with Golden type apples, but you can choose the one you like the most.
- We cut the lemon in half and squeeze it until we obtain its juice. The lemon serves to enhance the flavor of the apples. Some cooks add 2 lemons, however, it is too acidic for my taste and I prefer to just add the juice of one lemon.
- In a saucepan we add the apple pieces, the lemon juice on top and 2 tablespoons of water. At this point we can also optionally add a teaspoon of cinnamon.
- We heat the casserole with the ingredients over medium heat. If we have a vitro we put it at number 5-6. Meanwhile we can preheat the oven to a temperature of 200 º C up and down. If we use a fan we can lower the temperature to 185º C.
- When the apple begins to be hot, add the two tablespoons of brown sugar, not very full. The goal is not to cook the apple completely, but rather to make it a little soft.
- We cover the pot and leave it on medium-low heat for about 10 minutes.
- Once this time has passed, if there is any liquid left, we put it over high heat for 1 minute until it evaporates. It is important that there is only a small layer of water at the bottom of the pot. We reserve.
Preparation of the outer layer of the crumble
- Mix the dry ingredients in a bowl: flour, muesli, sugar and cinnamon until you have a homogeneous dough.
- We take the butter out of the refrigerator (it is important that it is cold for this recipe) and cut it into cubes. Optionally we can add a pinch of salt, but it is not necessary.
- We add the butter with the rest of the ingredients. Now comes the most laborious part of the recipe. We have to wash our hands well and go picking up the mixture by rubbing with our hands in order to make crumbs. At the end of the recipe we leave you a video so you can see in more detail what the movements to do are.
Final preparation and presentation of the English crumble cake
- For the final preparation, we grease a mold with a little butter to prevent the dough from sticking when we bake the crumble cake.
- Add all the apple-based filling and then put the crumble dough on top. We can press the dough a little with our hands (very clean) to make it more compact.
- Once the oven is preheated (if you have done it when we have indicated it should already be hot) we put the mold inside and let it bake for 35-40 minutes. We will take it out when we see that it begins to be golden on top.
- Now we only have to serve the apple crumble and enjoy an exquisite English sweet. We can mix it with yogurt. However, it is very typical to eat it with a kind of custard called English cream.
Tips for preparing the best English crumble cake
To get a delicious dessert it is important to follow some tips and tricks. Below we show you the most important points to take into account when preparing this exquisite sweet dish.
Use all types of seasonal fruits
This recipe uses apples for the preparation of this dessert. However, we can use all kinds of seasonal fruits such as blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, pears, plums, peach or nectarines.
Try all types of fruits and decide which mixture you like the most to prepare this typical English dessert.
Control the liquid released by the fruit
It is important that when we prepare the pie filling there is not a lot of water since it could rise up to the crumble dough, preventing it from being crunchy.
If we see that a lot of water accumulates during the preparation of the filling, we can increase the heat to maximum for a minute so that it evaporates. Another trick is to put a tablespoon of flour so that it absorbs the remaining liquid.
Use multiple ingredients for the dough
This recipe accepts a large multitude of variants. In our case we have prepared the dough using muesli. However, we can add many other ingredients such as oat flakes, cookie pieces, nuts or muesli with fruit such as coconut or banana.
Crumble pie accompaniment
We have many options to complement our crumble. Some recommendations are vanilla ice cream, caramel or chocolate syrups, or natural yogurt.
However, our favorite accompaniment and the most typical in England is crème anglaise. The crumble is mixed with this very hot cream since this dessert is typical of the coldest months of the year, autumn and winter.
Preparation of the dough
As we have mentioned before, during the step-by-step explanation of the recipe, to prepare the dough it is necessary to rub your hands together to generate crumbs. It may seem a bit confusing, however, in the following video you can see what the movements are to make a wonderful dough for our English cake.
